The iconic Eiffel Tower in France will increase its ticket prices by 20%, reported the Eiffel Tower's affiliate. CNN BFMTV, to help cover the costs of renovation works and financial losses during the coronavirus pandemic.
An adult ticket, including an elevator ride to the top of the Parisian landmark, will cost 35.30 euros from June 17, rising from 29.40 euros, BFMTV reported. The same ticket for children between 12 and 14 years old will cost 17.70 euros, and the price for children between four and 11 years old to reach the top of the tower will be 8.90 euros
The price increase was caused, BFMTV reported, in part due to a “significant loss of revenue” caused by the “health crisis between 2020 and 2022”.
In 2020, fewer than 1.6 million people visited the Eiffel Tower, compared with almost 6.2 million visitors the previous year, the monument's operating company, Sociéte d'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE) said. Fewer than 2.1 million people visited the following year.
In both years, operating costs were about triple the milestone's global turnover, SETE said.
Renovation works are also behind the rising costs, including “lead prevention measures” related to painting the tower, BFMTV reported. Painting works are expected to last until 2027, and work is also planned on the elevators, which will lead to occasional closures.
A CNN contacted SETE for comment.
