A tiger was shot and died at the Naples Zoo, Florida, after attacking an employee who entered “an unauthorized area” near his cage and tried to feed or pet the animal on Wednesday night (December 29). according to authorities.
According to a post on the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, the man, who is a member of a third-party cleaning service hired by Naples Zoo, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital after the tiger snapped his arm and pulled him into the enclosure through the fence.
The first officer on the scene kicked the fence and tried to get the tiger to release the man’s arm from its mouth, but the officer was forced to shoot the animal, the statement said. Naples Zoo told Reuters the eight-year-old Malay tiger named “Eko” died after the incident.
On its official web page, the zoo claims that Eko had resided there since December 2019, after being transferred from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.
