US House of Representatives member Rich McCormick has called on the government to formally declare Binance exchange executive Tigran Gambaryan a hostage if his criminal case in Nigeria is not resolved by the end of the month.
Rich McCormick has submitted a resolution to the US Congress calling on lawmakers to officially designate Binance’s head of financial crimes Tigran Gambaryan as a “hostage.”
The congressman said Nigeria has been wrongfully holding Gambaryan in prison since February “for the purpose of pressuring and extorting money” from cryptocurrency exchange Binance. He called on the U.S. government to take urgent measures to influence Nigerian authorities to release Gambaryan from custody and provide him with the necessary medical care.
Earlier, the Nigerian Minister of Information denied the assertion of US congressmen that Tigran Gambaryan, who is being held by the authorities of the African country, is being held in poor conditions. The Minister noted that Gambaryan is being detained legally, has access to consular services, and the conditions of detention do not threaten his health.
