USA Today reports that a 16-year-old girl who went missing in Asheville, North Carolina was rescued after she caught the driver’s attention with hand gestures previously seen on the popular social networking site TikTok.

A man who was driving next to the car in which the girl was, recognized the gestures and reported to the police that she seemed to be in an unpleasant situation. The sheriff’s office confirmed that the girl showed non-verbal labels that meant “violence” and “I need help.”

As a result, 61-year-old James Herbert Brick was arrested for “illegal imprisonment.” The police stopped him right on the highway, the girl was sitting in the back seat of the car. Brick’s phone had pornographic pictures of the girl. The girl told law enforcement that she traveled with Brick through North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.

The Canadian Women’s Foundation says there is an international universal signal for help in cases of domestic violence or other problems. It is necessary to turn the palm towards the person, then squeeze the thumb and cover it with the rest of the fingers.
