Tiktok influencer’s murder: Sheinbaum pronounces on a case

Mexico’s security office is investigating the murder of a young beauty influencer who was killed while broadcasting a live video on Tiktok, President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday (15).

Authorities claim that the death of 23 -year -old Valeria Marquez is being investigated as possible femicide, the murder of women or girls for gender reasons.

The murder caused commotion in a country facing high levels of violence against women.

“An investigation is underway to find those responsible and the reason behind this situation,” Sheinbaum said at his morning press conference.

“Our solidarity with her family,” he added.

Márquez was killed on Tuesday (13) in the beauty salon where he worked in the city of Zapopan for a man who entered and shot her, said the state prosecutor of Jalisco. The prosecutor did not disclose the name of any suspect.

Seconds before the murder, Márquez was seen in his live broadcast on Tiktok sitting at a table holding a stuffed animal. She was heard by saying, “They are coming,” before a voice in the background asks, “Hey, is it worth it?”

“Yes,” said Márquez, just before silencing the sound of live broadcast.

Moments later, she was shot dead. A person seemed to take his phone, his face briefly visible in the broadcast before the video finished.

Paramedics present at the scene confirmed that she died due to bullet injuries to the head and chest, according to the news vehicle El Financiero.

Márquez, who had almost 200,000 followers on Instagram and Tiktok, had previously said in the live broadcast that someone went to the salon when she was not there with an “expensive gift” to deliver. The influencer, who seemed concerned, said she did not intend to wait for the person to return.

“So far, there are no accusations against specific individuals,” Jalisco’s prosecutor said in a statement on Wednesday night (14).

According to Mexican authorities, femicide may involve degrading violence, sexual abuse, relationship with the killer or exposure of the victim’s body in public space.

Sheinbaum said the Mexico Security Office, consisting of high -ranking ministers, is working to solve the case of murder in conjunction with the prosecutors.

Mexico is tied with Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia as the countries with the fourth highest femicide rate in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the latest data from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, with 1.3 deaths per 100,000 women in 2023.

Jalisco occupies the sixth place among the 32 Mexican states, including Mexico City, in homicides, with 909 registered since the beginning of Sheinbaum’s term in October 2024, according to the Tresearch data consultancy.
