United States President Donald Trump said he will extend the deadline to Bytedance, a China -based technology company and owner of Tiktok, sell the US assets from the application. The US leader stated that the measure would be taken if no agreement was closed until June 19 – the deadline for Tiktok to be banned in the country.
“I would like … I would like to see this done,” Trump told the program “Meet The Press With Kristen Welker” from NBC News, in an interview recorded on Friday (2) and will be shown in the US this Sunday (4).
Trump said he had an “ideal point” for the app after he helped him win younger voters in the 2024 presidential election, adding, “Tiktok is … it’s very interesting, but it will be protected.”
Trump has already postponed Tiktok’s ban in the American territory imposed by Congress, which would initially enter into January.
In addition, an agreement was underway to separate Tiktok operations in the US in a new company based in the country, which would be operated and installed as a majority property by US investors.
However, this agreement was suspended after China indicated that it would not approve it after Trump ads of high Chinese products.
Democratic senators argue that Trump has no legal authority to extend the deadline, and suggest that the agreement that was being considered would not meet legal requirements.
A source close to Bytedance’s US investors said in April that work on the possible deal continues before the deadline of June 19, but that the White House and Beijing would have to resolve the tariff dispute first.
Trump told NBC News that China was eager to reach an agreement, citing the impact that 145% tariffs on Chinese products were having on their economy.
The US president said he would not reduce rates to take Beijing to the negotiating table, but could eventually reduce them as part of a broader deal.
“At some point, I will reduce them because, otherwise, it would never be possible to do business with them. And they really want to do business,” he said.
The law required Tiktok to stop operating until January 19, unless Bytedance completed the sale of application assets in the US.
Trump began his second term as president on January 20, and chose not to continue with the application. The deadline extended to early April and again last month to June 19.
