TikTok will strengthen enforcement against paid political publications in the US

TikTok will work to prevent content creators from publishing paid political content in preparation for the US midterm elections in November, the company said on Wednesday.

While the platform has banned paid political ads since 2019, campaign strategists circumvented the ban by paying influencers to promote political issues.

The company seeks to end this by holding meetings with creators and agencies to remind them that this type of publication goes against TikTok’s policies, said Eric Han, the company’s head of security in the United States.

He added that internal teams, including those working on trust and security, will monitor for signs that creators are being paid to publish political content. The company will also rely on media reports and external partners to find content that violates the rules.

“We saw this as a problem in 2020. As soon as we discover posts of this type, we will remove them from our platform”, pointed out Han.

TikTok made the announcement following similar decisions by Meta and Twitter.

The owner of Facebook and Instagram said on Tuesday (16) that it will prevent political advertisers from running new ads a week before the election, a measure also adopted in 2020.

Last week, Twitter highlighted that it planned to repeat previous strategies for the US election, including putting markers on some deceptive tweets to debunk lies before they spread.
