A TikToker revealed her surprise when she received a menu at a restaurant without the prices listed, while the waiter gave her friend a list with the prices listed normally.
In a recent video shared on TikTok, Abbie Chatfield explained how she went to a good restaurant with her boyfriend. When they sat down at the table, she was given a menu that did not contain prices for any of the items on the menu.
“So we are in the restaurant and my menu had no prices,” he explained. “My friend told me, ‘Yes, it’s expensive.’ And I said, “Is it expensive?” How do you know this;””
Chatfield, who was competing in the seventh season of the Australian series The Bachelor, based on the American series of the same name, recorded various parts of the restaurant to show that she expected it to be an expensive place. However, she was still curious about how her boyfriend knew it was expensive, so she realized that his menu had “prices written on it”.
“Only men get menus with prices? Patriarchy”
In the text above the video, she highlighted her point of view and wrote: “Do men only get menus with prices? Patriarchy”.
According to the Atlas Obscura, giving women menus without prices, also known as the “women’s menu”, was a practice in “luxury” restaurants across Europe, as it was thought that men would pay. The site also notes that these menus are not common in the US. In the comments below her video, Chatfield acknowledged that the restaurant where she dined was in Venice, Italy.
As of April 5, the video has more than 718,900 views, with TikTok users commenting that no issues should be made about issues such as payment or portion size for a man and a woman in a restaurant.
“The idea of what is ‘feminine’ and what is not in restaurants is ridiculous!” Says another comment. “They always give me the cocktail or the smallest meal even when it is not mine.”
However, some viewers argued in a line of classic sexist stereotype that menus should not be considered a problem and encouraged Chatfield to get her boyfriend to pay for their meal.
“Do not complain! “I would like them to give me a menu without prices,” wrote one TikTok user, while another said, “The man has to pay for it.”
