Tim Burton is talking about his former working relationship with Disney, saying he is unlikely to work with the company again in the future.
The filmmaker was at the Lumiere Festival in France over the weekend, where he received the honorary Prix Lumière award. He spoke at a press conference on Saturday (22), where he compared working for the company to the character Dumbo, both trapped “in this big horrible circus”.
“It became very homogenized, very consolidated. There’s less room for different kinds of things,” Burton said, according to Deadline.
Burton noted that Disney is now largely focused on its sustaining franchises primarily in the Star Wars and Marvel cinematic universes and its potential involvement in the MCU in the future, he said the chances are slim.
“I can only handle one universe, I cannot handle a multiple universe,” he said.
“I was hired and fired several times throughout my career there,” he added. “The thing about ‘Dumbo’ is that’s why I think my days with Disney are over, I realized that I was Dumbo, that I was working in this big horrible circus and I needed to escape. This film is very autobiographical on a certain level.”
Burton last collaborated with Disney on the live-action retelling of “Dumbo” 2019. The director of “Beetlejuice” first worked for Mouse House as a junior animator for films such as “The Fox and the Hound” 1981. He went on to direct films such as “Jack’s wierd world” (through Touchstone) in 1993, “James and the Giant Peach” from 1996, “Frankenweenie” from 2012 and “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010 (along with the 2016 sequel) among other titles.
The director’s next project, the Addams Family spinoff series “Wandinha” for Netflix, will be released on November 23.
