Tim Roth starred with Tarantino and fought the Hulk. 9 best British roles

Tim Roth is an actor who, from the very first roles, won the hearts of both critics and audiences. In the 90s, Quentin Tarantino made him popular. Since then, he managed to play a brilliant musician, an expert in the field of human lies, a general in the army of smart monkeys, and even fight the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the awards all bypassed him. We remember the best works of the charismatic Briton and wonder where his Oscars are.

“Stukač” (1984)

  • Film Search: 7.0.
  • IMDb: 7,1.

Tim Roth made his acting debut in the television film Made in Britain, where he brilliantly played the main role. The first full-length full-length film in the biography of the actor is considered to be a crime road movie by Stephen Frears “Snitch”. Roth played a supporting role, coping with no worse than the already famous Terence Stamp and John Hurt at that time. For this work, he received a nomination from the British Film Academy in the category “Best Debut”. In the story, two gangsters (one of whom is played by Tim Roth) were assigned to steal and bring to the boss a snitch who turned in his accomplices ten years ago. The task is complicated by the fact that the police become aware of the kidnapping, unexpected guests find themselves in a rented apartment, and so on. Tim Roth gives out a full range of emotions here, playing a living character who can equally easily court a girl, and in the next square give her a kick in the ass.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990)

  • Film Search: 7.9.
  • IMDb: 7,4.

By 1990, Tim Roth had already played several brilliant roles, including Van Gogh in Robert Altman’s Vincent and Theo. Therefore, when Tom Stoppard was looking for leading performers for the film adaptation of his own play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”, his choice fell on two of the most talented British actors – Gary Oldman and Tim Roth. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are minor characters in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. However, in the work of Stoppard, all the action is shown precisely on their behalf. The film received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, but many critics noted the excessive theatricality of the production, which is not inherent in the film format. As mentioned above, the film shows the events of Hamlet from the side of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and therefore it is better to watch it with knowledge of the original (or even better in the original voice acting, since the translation of this tape is an example of how not to do it).

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

  • Film Search: 8.1.
  • IMDb: 8,3.

In 1992, Quentin Tarantino released his debut film, Reservoir Dogs. The tape became a hit thanks not only to sharp dialogues, bloody scenes and directorial work, but also to the amazing performance of the entire cast, including Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi and, of course, Tim Roth, who immediately became one of the director’s favorite performers. The film follows how crime boss Joe Cabot brought together six experienced but completely unfamiliar criminals to rob a jewelry store. And although they carefully thought everything out before the case, the robbery is going as far as possible according to plan. Someone, apparently, turned in the bandits’ plan to the police. Most of the scenes are dialogues between bandits. And this style of storytelling was to the liking of many critics. As a result, the film won many awards at various film festivals.

Rob Roy (1995)

  • Film Search: 7.2.
  • IMDb: 6,9.

This 1995 film by Michael Clayton-Jones, in all honesty, cannot be called one of the best in Tim Roth’s career. Nevertheless, it was for his work in this film that the actor received his only major award from the British Film Academy, as well as nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. The picture tells about the intrigues of the Scottish kingdom of the early 18th century. Rob Roy of the MacGregor clan is forced to ask for money from the not too noble Duke of Montrose in order to survive the coming harsh winter. He receives the money, but at the same time he finds himself embroiled in the most dangerous battle of his life. Tim Roth plays here the dapper British swordsman Archibald Cunningham, who is in the service of the Duke. The main role in the film was played by Liam Neeson.

“Four Rooms” (1995)

  • Film Search: 7.7.
  • IMDb: 6,8.

Four Rooms is a unique painting in many ways. It consists of four different parts, directed by different directors (Allison Anders, Alexander Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino). In each of them, we are talking about different things and different actors are filmed, including Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Madonna, as well as Bruce Willis, who was not listed in the credits due to the fact that he was filmed for free (according to the rules of the Screen Actors Guild, artists do not have the right to film without a fee). The four episodes are united by the hero of Tim Roth – the night porter of the Monsignor Hotel, in which the film takes place, named Ted. He gets to the witches’ sabbath, almost dies at the hands of a jealous husband, barely gets away from the playful kids of the gangster and takes part in a strange bet of eccentric gentlemen.

The Legend of the Pianist (1998)

  • Film Search: 8.1.
  • IMDb: 8,1.

The legendary film by Giuseppe Tornatore was based on Alessandro Baricco’s Novecento (One Thousand Nine Hundredth). On the first day of 1900, a baby was found in a lemon box on the Virginia transatlantic steamer between America and Europe. The boy spent his whole life on board the ship, never going ashore. At the same time, he learned to play the piano so well that he surprised even seasoned music lovers. Now it seems that for this role, Tim Roth should have collected a whole bunch of awards, but in 1998 critics reacted to the picture as cool as possible. It is surprising that for quite ordinary roles of actors, it happens, they fall asleep with awards, and for such benefit performances they are silent. The only exception was Ennio Morricone, who wrote the music for the film, which was awarded the Golden Globe for his work. Interestingly, part of the filming took place in Odessa, in the military harbor on the ship Lesozavodsk.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

  • Film Search: 6.8.
  • IMDb: 5,7.

year 2001. Director Tim Burton, on screen one of his muses Helena Bonham Carter, and starring rising star Mark Wahlberg. What could have gone wrong? Everything. Lack of budget, tight production times, studio pressures that caused many of the author’s storylines to be cut (the romance between a man and a chimpanzee was considered outrageous), and some heroes were hastily added. As a result, the film received a Golden Raspberry anti-award in the Worst Remake / Sequel category. However, in fact, the film did not come out so bad, which is confirmed by the mostly positive reviews about the film throughout the time. Moreover, even at the time of its release, it was nominated for several awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Picture. And Tim Roth, who played the role of General of the Army of the Apes in Planet of the Apes, was nominated for MTV’s Best Villain and Saturn for Best Supporting Actor.

“Lie to me” (2009)

  • Film Search: 8.1.
  • IMDb: 8,0.

Although this series begins with the message that no real faces are prototypes for the heroes of the series, in fact, the image of the protagonist (Cal Lightman, played by Tim Roth) was largely copied from the famous psychologist and expert on the theory of deception Paul Ekman, who acted as a consultant to the project. … The plot revolves around a team of lie-recognizers led by Dr. Lightman. The Lightman Group is often approached by FBI agents and government officials for help. This is because Cal Lightman can identify lies by the slightest changes in facial expressions, which a person cannot even consciously control. And although the series itself lasted only three seasons, it was well received by the public. People especially liked Tim Roth’s performance. But it’s not easy to play geniuses. In 2011, Tim Roth won the People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Crime Fighter.

The Hateful Eight (2015)

  • Film Search: 7.9.
  • IMDb: 7,8.

In 2015, Tim Roth appeared in the films of Quentin Tarantino for the fourth time. Following the success of Django Unchained, the director decided to once again turn to the western genre. Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell played some of the main roles. The film turned out, as always, caustic, harsh and bloody. In the story, a bounty hunter, a Mexican, an Englishman and a Confederate met in one bar. Sounds like the beginning of a good movie. Interestingly, the film received Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for music by Ennio Morricone. The famous composer again bypassed Tim Roth and all the other participants in the work process in recognition. Soon, Tim Roth will return to one of the forgotten roles – Abomination in the MCU. They try not to mention “The Incredible Hulk” in decent circles, since the tape is the only failure in the franchise. However, Tim Roth has established himself well and will soon have the opportunity to show his character in the TV series “She-Hulk”.
