Tim Walz thanks Biden, talks about abortion and attacks Trump in speech at the Democratic Convention

Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota and vice presidential candidate with Kamala Harris, gave a powerful speech on the third night of the Democratic National Convention.

He was introduced by a video narrated by his wife, in which various aspects of the governor’s life were presented, and he began his speech by thanking Kamala Harris and Joe Biden for “four years of historic leadership”.

“It is the honor of my life to accept your nomination for vice president of the United States,” Walz said of the nomination to run for this year’s Democratic Party election.

He also recalled his time in the National Guard, where he was a teacher and also an American football coach. “Never underestimate a public school teacher,” Walz said after talking about the beginning of his political career.

At another point in his speech, when talking about his achievements as governor, he highlighted: “While other states were banning books from their schools, we were banning hunger from ours.”

“We also protect reproductive freedoms, because in Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and their personal choices,” he added, noting that he and his wife have undergone fertility treatment.

Attacks on Trump and talks about freedom and abortion

Tim Walz also said that this year’s presidential election is largely about freedom.

“When Republicans use the word freedom, they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office. Corporations should be free to pollute the water and air. And banks should be free to take advantage of consumers,” he said.

In contrast, the governor stressed that freedom, for Democrats, means “making a better life for ourselves and the people we love,” as well as “the freedom for our children to go to school without fear of being shot.”

Walz also attacked Donald Trump and JD Vance, noting that “if these guys get back into the White House,” they will raise the cost for the middle class and will ban abortion in the country “with or without Congress.”

“When I was teaching, every year we elected students to be student body president. Those kids could teach Donald Trump about what a leader is,” he said.

“We will not back down”

Then Tim Walz said that leaders don’t “spend all day insulting people and blaming others,” but get the job done.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to turn the page on these guys. So just say, ‘We’re not going to back down,’” he said, adding that Democrats have “something better” to offer the American people: Kamala Harris.

At this point in the speech, the Minnesota governor said she will “cut taxes” for the middle class, act on drug prices and help make housing more affordable.

“And no matter who you are, Kamala Harris will fight for your freedom to live the life you want to live,” Walz said.

Who is Tim Walz?

Walz, 60, a military veteran, former high school teacher and football coach, is expected to speak about his childhood on a Nebraska farm, his family and the freedoms that Democrats say are under attack by Donald Trump.

He is serving his second term as governor of Minnesota. He also chairs the Democratic Governors Association, an organization that brings together state and regional Democratic officials.

Walz previously served 12 years in Congress, representing a rural, conservative-leaning district that, both before and after his tenure, was overwhelmingly Republican-dominated.
