Going against colleagues by profession, Timbaland sees no problems in the use of artificial intelligence in music. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician said he has even used a new technological tool to create music.
“You can release great songs in minutes. I always wanted to do what Quincy Jones did with Michael Jackson’s thriller when he had [quase] 50 years. So my thriller, for me, is this tool. God introduced me to this tool, ”says Timbaland about Suno.
Last year, the musician became Suno consultant, going against artists and record labels who denounce the use of artificial intelligence in art. According to a recent study, AI can reduce musicians’ income by up to 24% in the near future.
For Timbaland, however, the appeal has been personally very profitable. “I probably did a thousand beats in three months, and many of them-not all-are hits, and from all genres you can imagine… I just made four K-pop songs this morning!” Said Timbaland.
Controversy about AI
In April 2024, a series of artists, such as Stevie Wonder, Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, signed an open letter denouncing AI music. “Some of the largest and most powerful companies are using I was to replace human artists, violating our rights and corroding the value of our work,” they wrote.
Timbaland, however, believes that artists should learn from the tool. “Like, how do we inspire it? And this can be resolved,” said the artist, known for producing songs like Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake and Aaliyah.
“The tool will raise the job. It will not simply operate on your own. You can give you something you have never thought, and it becomes the biggest record of your life. You will criticize it then?… I never want to remove humans than they do. I just want to inspire them to do more,” he said.
