The American magazine Time reported that in the coming weeks it will begin accepting APE tokens to pay for collectibles, subscriptions and “unique access” to Time materials.
Time President Keith Grossman noted that the magazine’s readers have access to content of all kinds, whether it’s print, digital or video. Therefore, people should also have a wide choice when paying for published materials – if they want to pay with cash, credit card or cryptocurrencies, they should not have any problems with this. The payment acceptance feature in APE will be available in the coming weeks.
Time’s announcement comes just days after Yuga Labs, the developer behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), launched its internal APE token. It has already been listed on major trading floors, and is currently trading at around $15. Recall that last year the magazine began accepting payments in BTC, ETH, XRP, LTC, DOGE and some tokens. In addition, the publication became a participant in the NFT industry by issuing its own collection tokens in 2021 with the image of its covers.
Perhaps it is the interest in NFT that explains the addition of APE as a new payment method for a subscription, given that the Yuga Labs project is very popular among users. However, in a recent interview with Time, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin compared APE tokens to gambling. He expressed surprise why people are willing to shell out millions of dollars for collectible tokens that do not carry any benefit to society.
