Time Out lists the best cities in the world for 2022

Not every city skyline includes an extinct volcano, a towering hilltop castle and a lineup of centuries-old buildings, but the awe-inspiring skyline of Edinburgh is just one of the reasons why the Scottish capital is the best city in “Time Out” to 2022.

Each year, the media company asks nearly 20,000 city dwellers around the world, along with its network of global editors, to identify what makes their city great through a survey known as the Timeout Index. Time Out uses the resulting data to compile its global city rankings.

It’s not just Edinburgh’s beauty that took the top spot in 2022, the city is also known for its art festivals and burgeoning food scene, and residents interviewed praised the ease of getting around the city as well as the welcoming and inclusive feel. .

“It’s been amazing to see how much the city has developed since we were kids,” the team behind the newly opened Edinburgh wine bar, Eleanore, highlighted by Time Out as one of the city’s highlights, told CNN. “It’s great to see him getting the recognition he deserves.”

While last year’s list praised places that came together during the pandemic, this year’s Time Out highlighted everything we’ve missed in the past two years, taking a close look at each city’s restaurants, bars, nightlife and museums.

The goal, says Time Out, is to make the ranking “the best travel list for 2022”.

“These are places that stand out in everything that inspires us to travel and experience,” said Huw Oliver of Time Out.

Just behind Edinburgh in second place is Chicago, lauded both for its nightlife scene and its resilience in the pandemic era. Third on the list is Medellín, Colombia, famous for its nightlife, boutique hotels and mouthwatering food.

And it’s a big win for Scotland, as Glasgow is 4th on the list, with Time Out championing the city’s varied dining options and friendly atmosphere.

Sustainability, safety and public transport initiatives are also part of the ranking. On the green front, “Time Out” confirms Glaswegian club SWG3’s recent initiative to generate energy through dancers’ body heat, while Amsterdam, fifth on the list, is recognized as the most cycling-friendly city in the world.

The goal, says Oliver of Time Out, was for the 2022 summary to highlight “all the things that make cities fun and vibrant to visit.” Check out the full ranking here.
