Times Square will be declared a gun-free zone starting this Thursday (1st)

Starting this Thursday (1st) the famous Times Square, in New York, will be declared a “gun-free zone”. This means that people caught by the police carrying firearms in the region can be criminally charged, being subject to imprisonment of more than one year as a penalty.

The measure, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in July, is a response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision that mandated legal carrying guns in all states across the country — overturning a century-old New York law that placed restrictions on guns outside of home. House.

With the new rule coming into force, some areas in the state are now classified as “sensitive”, and it is forbidden to carry firearms in these places. In addition to Times Square, the list includes schools, churches, government-owned buildings, healthcare facilities and public transportation.

According to survey of CNN this year the US counts 450 mass shootings (being considered “mass shootings” those in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter).

At a news conference on Wednesday, Hochul said the changes include strengthening “background checks and weapons safety training requirements, banning concealed carrying in secure and sensitive locations, and requiring license renewals every three years instead of five years.”

Signposts indicating locations that will be considered gun-free zones will be displayed in Times Square. New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Legal Operations Robert Barrows said signs will be posted at all points of entry and exit into the area.

Worldwide known for its yellow buildings, lights and taxis, Times Square is also a tourist spot that receives around 360,000 people daily.

Also on Wednesday, the governor of New York announced that a law to raise the minimum age to buy a semi-automatic weapon to 21 will take effect on September 4. She added that the state will be the first to require training for firearms licenses.
