Titan submarine lost control and began to spin in circles on previous dive

On a previous expedition, the submarine Titan – which imploded last month, killing all five passengers on board – lost control and began to spin in circles, leaving passengers panicked and trapped for hours. The situation was reported in a documentary by BBC of 2022, according to the portal The Mirror.

Images from inside the submarine show the vessel turning, 3.8 kilometers deep, as the pilot of that expedition, Scott Griffith, says: “We have a problem”.

“There is something wrong with my thrusters. I’m pushing and nothing is happening,” says Griffith in the footage.

The thrusters would have been installed incorrectly at the time, according to the The Mirrorwhich means that one thruster pushed the submersible one way and the other the other, making the vessel spin in circles.

“You know, I was thinking we’re not going to make it,” passenger Reneta Rojas told BBC in the documentary. “We are literally 300 meters from the Titanic and although we are already in the debris field, we can’t go anywhere but go around in circles.”

At the time, the crew had to reprogram the video game controller that controlled the movement of the vessel in order to return to the surface.
