Titanic director admits Jack could have climbed in the door with Rose

Twenty-five years after the release of “Titanic”, the debate on whether or not Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) could have climbed in the door along with Rose (Kate Winslet) to survive the sinking may come to an end.

In the National Geographic special documentary “Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron”, the director of the film himself – James Cameron – recreates the scenario in which the protagonist couple of the film are in the freezing sea waiting for rescue with the help of two stuntmen.

In an excerpt from the documentary, shown by the American auditorium program “Good Morning America”, Cameron admits: “Jack could have survived, but there are many variables.”

In the video, it is possible to see that the stuntmen tested different scenarios and different positions in which Jack and Rose are together on top of the door. In some of them, Jack dies anyway, in others, both die.

Only in one specific situation among those that were tested could Jack have survived in time to be rescued, according to the director: if the two stay on top of the door and Rose lends her life jacket to warm him up.

That is, even after testing, it seems impossible to reach a certain conclusion.

“Jack’s thought process was, ‘I’m not going to put her at risk.’ And that’s 100% the character,” Cameron said.

25 years celebration

The film “Titanic” will be shown again in cinemas around the world in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the release of the production. The film directed by James Cameron will premiere remastered in 3D 4K technology in Brazil.

Launched in 1997, Titanic launched Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet to fame, who play the passionate couple Rose and Jack during a trip on the ship that left Southampton bound for New York in 1912, but which sank after hitting an iceberg.

The production, which had a budget of US$ 200 million – approximately R$ 1 billion –, was a success at the box office, earning more than US$ 2 billion (about R$ 10 billion) worldwide and won 11 Oscar statuettes – among them, best picture and best direction for Cameron.
