TJ sets date for popular jury of those accused of death of cameraman hit by rocket in Rio

After almost 10 years of the death of cameraman Santiago Andrade, aged 49, the Court of Justice of Rio (TJ-RJ) set the date of the popular jury of the accused Fabio Raposo Barbosa and Caio Silva de Souza.

The two respond for qualified intentional homicide and explosion. They were arrested, but today they are free.

The plenary session of the 3rd Jury Court will take place on December 12, starting at 1 pm, by decision of Judge Tula Correa de Mello, holder of the 3rd Criminal Court of the Capital.

Santiago was hit in the head by a rocket on February 6, 2014, while working to cover a demonstration against the increase in bus fares, in the center of the city. With his vision obscured by the camera on his shoulder, he didn’t see the rocket being fired.

The cameraman was rescued by colleagues from the press and taken to the Souza Aguiar Hospital, also in the center. He was hospitalized for four days, but succumbed to his injuries. Santiago suffered skull depression and was brain dead.

The TV Band cameraman is survived by his wife, Arlita Andrade, with whom he had been married for 30 years, and his daughter, Vanessa Andrade, aged 29 at the time.
