The city of Rio de Janeiro needs more doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to be able to provide the booster dose for those over 18 years of age. This statement was made by Daniel Soranz, Rio de Janeiro’s municipal health secretary.
The Ministry of Health announced this Tuesday (16) the expansion of the age group to receive the third dose. Now, anyone over 18 years old who has received the second dose at least five months ago can take the booster.
“We were taken by surprise, we did plan to apply booster to this group, but so far we don’t have those doses. Let’s wait for the PNI’s recommendation. At the press conference, the minister did not talk about new deliveries,” stated Rio’s health secretary, Daniel Soranz.
This Tuesday (16), the city reached the age of 60 years for the application of the third dose. According to the Ministry’s previous recommendation, the reinforcement should be aimed at the elderly, health professionals and people with a high degree of immunosuppression.
Daniel Soranz also informed that, with the available doses, a new schedule for the booster will be set up by the folder. The city already counts almost 1 million (971 thousand) of booster doses applied. Currently, 75% of the total population of the city has a complete vaccination schedule with the two doses.
CNN has learned that the vaccine that will be used in the booster dose for everyone over the age of 18 will be the vaccine from AstraZeneca, Pfizer or even Janssen.
