To avoid shocks with airplanes, a poultry team at airport in SP; look

GRU Airport concessionaire teams, responsible for the management of Guarulhos Airport, Greater São Paulo, were seen early in the afternoon of Thursday (10) doing bird capture work that were near the landslides and takeoff track.

The purpose of the action is to avoid collisions between airplanes and birds, which in aviation is known as Bird Strike. This year alone, until April 6, 64 Bird Strikes were recorded in Brazil, according to the Center for Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention (Cenipa).

The images of this Thursday’s capture operation were made by the channel “Aviation Guarulhos JPD” and assigned to CNN . See below:

In the images, you can see the employees surrounding the birds, which are then crawled. The cages are then covered by cloths and placed in a dealership pickup truck.

THE CNN He questioned GRU Airport about the work done on Thursday, but the company did not provide details. He said only that he “has a Fauna Risk Management Plan, aligned with the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) guidelines, conducted by the Environmental Coordination.”

“This planning includes routine actions such as the management of eggs, nests and animals, vegetation control, inch and shelter removal, as well as distressing techniques. The measures also include continuous monitoring of the species present in the operational area and their attractions,” added the concessionaire.

Use of hawks

One of the measures used at airports to capture and chase birds is the so -called falcoaria. In this practice, trained hawks are used to scare or catch birds that are on the airport site.

In Porto Alegre, the Fraport Brasil concessionaire, responsible for Salgado Filho Airport, has been using the service since last year. Biologist Denise Giani explains that the hawks make flights of “animal chapter or capture”. “At the time of capture, the bird of prey holds the prey on the floor and awaits the arrival of the Falcoiro”, who is the professional responsible for training and taking care of the hawks.

To prevent the captured birds from being injured or killed, the biologist explains that a beaded beads are placed on the clutches of the birds of prey. These objects “will make it more difficult to pierce a bird that may be captured.”

According to the biologist, the captured birds are taken to a release area, located about 120 kilometers from the airport.

Increase in cases

The number of Bird Strike cases in Brazil increased by 24.5% from 2023 to 2024, from 746 to 929 cases. In the two years, there were only two cases of incidents with victims. The injuries were light, according to the report of the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention System (Sipaer).

Last year, the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro led the records.
