To CNN, D’Avila defends privatizing Petrobras and says that state-owned companies are job hangers

The pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Felipe d’Ávila (Novo) declared, this Tuesday (21), in an interview with CNN that Petrobras should be privatized and that state-owned companies are job holders.

“The world is in renewable energy, and we are discussing the anachronism of state-owned companies that are real job hangers, corruption and inefficiency, which makes the price of gasoline go up at the pumps”, says D’Ávila.

“Therefore, we do need, in this political campaign, to discuss proposals to make Brazil grow again. And one of them is certainly privatization, the opening of the Brazilian market. Because without market opening and privatization, competition does not increase, and without increased competition, the price does not fall”, he continues.

José Mauro Coelho resigned as president of Petrobras last Monday (20). The decision came three days after a new increase in fuel prices and amid pressure from the government.

Coelho was fired a month ago, but the process of checking the candidate nominated to be his replacement, Caio Paes de Andrade, has not yet ended. Board member Fernando Borges temporarily assumes the command of Petrobras, after the appointment of the company’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Márcio Weber.

In addition to leaving the presidency of the state-owned company, Coelho also resigned as a member of the Board, as disclosed by the company.

According to D’Ávila, the current crisis is showing how the company continues to be politically manipulated, and that the continuous change of presidents will not change the price of fuel.

In his opinion, two measures could be used to circumvent the problem: the stabilization fund, using resources from the sharing of oil and royalties to create it at a time of great volatility.

Another would be as used in Spain and Portugal, with the registration of the CPF when filling the car’s tank, and at the pump itself R$ 0.60 or R$ 0.70 would be returned to the consumer. The proposal would be viable “because the price of oil has gone up, and therefore so has government revenue.”
