The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), detailed in an interview with CNN the ban on motorcycle taxis in the capital of São Paulo.
The measure has generated controversy and placed the municipal administration on a collision course with app transport companies.
According to Nunes, a 2023 decree prohibits the transport of passengers on motorcycles in the city.
After company 99 began offering the service and went to court against the ban, the city hall notified the company to suspend the activity within 24 hours.
Possible lawsuit
“If they do not comply within 24 hours, which expire this afternoon, the city of São Paulo will take legal action, charging a fine and claiming moral damages,” said the mayor.
Nunes expressed concern about the company’s disregard for rules and court decisions.
The justification for the ban, according to the mayor, is the safety of users. “There is this concern about using a motorcycle with a passenger. Around 427 people died from January to November last year alone in motorcycle accidents in the city”, he highlighted.
“It is a company from China, which establishes itself here, everyone is very welcome, but it does not respect legal regulations, it does not respect norms, legislation and now it does not respect a court decision. This is very serious. If there is a company that does not respect it, we need to worry about it and we cannot accept it.”
City hall inspection
The city hall has already started monitoring the service.
Nunes reported that just on the morning of the day of the interview, nine motorcycles had already been seized.
The operation will have the support of the state government, including the participation of the Military Traffic Police.
