To CNN, police chief says that prisoner for killing mother and daughters in MT monitored victims before the crime

Arrested for killing a woman and her three daughters in Sorriso, in the interior of Mato Grosso, bricklayer Gilberto Rodrigues dos Anjos, 32 years old, monitored the family’s daily life before committing the crime. The information was given to CNN by delegate Bruno França, responsible for the case.

Cleci Calvi Cardoso, 46 years old, and her three daughters, aged 19, 13 and 10, were murdered inside their home on the 24th by the construction worker, who worked and lived on a construction site in the neighborhood. In addition to the homicides, Gilberto raped his mother and two eldest daughters. He confessed to the crimes and, according to the police chief, showed no regret.

“He confesses that he monitored the house’s routine for days before entering,” reports França. In fact, the criminal waited to commit the attacks on a day when Cleci’s husband and the girls’ father was not at home.

The father, Regivaldo Batista Cardoso, was a truck driver and, on the day of the crime, was on a work trip in another state. “He entered the house when there was no possibility of resistance from a man to confront him,” commented the deputy. It is not known for sure how long he monitored the family.

After being arrested, Gilberto said that he broke into the family home with the aim of carrying out a robbery, but that he had changed his mind. “The Civil Police do not believe this thesis, considering he is a sexual predator with a history of sexual violence.” He already had a history of rape and robbery (robbery followed by death).

“He didn’t take any possessions from the house, cell phone, jewelry, nothing. The only thing he took was the underwear of one of his victims as a souvenir. This all clearly shows that the person was fully aware, planned and premeditated of what he was doing,” said the delegate.

França adds that Gilberto had only been in Sorriso for a short time, about two months. The police chief claims that the bricklayer came “on the run” from Lucas do Rio Verde, in the interior of Mato Grosso, where he committed another rape in September.

“When he came here, the intelligence of Lucas’ colleagues warned us that it was very possible that he was in Sorriso. And we spent a lot of time looking for this guy. But we couldn’t find him, because he lived at the construction site. He worked. In other words, he was dressed as an honest citizen, and lived at the place of work.”

To the police, the bricklayer said he did not know how long he stayed at the victims’ house. Investigators believe he entered the house on Friday night and left in the early hours of Saturday.

The bricklayer’s behavior raised suspicion

Shortly after arriving at the family home, bricklayer Gilberto Rodrigues dos Anjos took a stance that caught the attention of the police and generated suspicion.

“We talked to the people who were around. A colleague who had arrived at the scene among the first gave us the information that all the construction workers had gone to the scene of the crime, because curiosity is natural in human beings, except for one of them, who, in this case, proved to be the killer. This behavior has already attracted the attention of the police. Why did everyone come and the boy didn’t want to see the crime scene?”, he asked.

Faced with this behavior, the police carried out research into who worked on the site. “When we checked this boy’s criminal history, he already had two outstanding arrest warrants, one of them for a rape and attempted murder that occurred in a neighboring municipality. [Lucas do Rio Verde] in modus operandi identical to this: he raped the woman and tried to cut her throat, but she got into a physical fight and then ended up escaping from him”, explained the police chief.

“At that moment, my conviction and that of the police officers who were with me: we already knew that he was the author. We needed technical proof to be able to say this,” he added.

Evidence at the crime scene

Inside the house, Scientific Police teams located a footprint of men’s shoes amidst the victims’ blood.

Suspicious, the police asked the bricklayer to show them where he slept on the construction site. The agents then saw a slipper that belonged to Gilberto and compared it with the footprint found in the house. “The expert immediately confirmed that his shoes were compatible with the footprint that was at the crime scene,” said França.

In the place where he slept, clothes with blood stains were also found, as well as underwear belonging to one of the victims.

Shortly afterwards, Gilberto confessed to the crime. He claimed he was under the influence of drugs. “The defense can claim that if they want. But his acts are acts that demonstrate full awareness at the time of the crime.”

Criminal personality

The case delegate stated that the police listened to Gilberto’s colleagues to understand whether he exhibited, on a daily basis, any type of behavior that could indicate a tendency to commit crimes. However, says França, he “was an apparently normal person”.

“We were only able to identify him due to his strange behavior when the police arrived at the scene of the crime. But other than that, an ordinary person, working normally, wouldn’t be a problem.”

“The boss said he never made any changes or anything. So, he is a person who would easily go unnoticed,” he continued.
