To CNN, Tina Turner explained why she left the United States in the 1990s

The life of singer Tina Turner, who died on Wednesday at the age of 83, has always been full of twists and turns. One of them was when she decided to move from the United States and set up her base in icy Switzerland, in 1995. The fact caused strangeness for some at the time, until in 1997, she spoke to the CNN about the reasons that led her to leave her country.

In an exclusive interview with presenter Larry King, on February 21, 1997, Tina Turner lists some reasons, personal and professional, for leaving the United States.

“I had to leave the United States because (now) I’m successful in other countries, I have more support for my music in Europe”, he said. At the time, she says, her musical career was no longer at its peak in North America and she found greater repercussions in the old continent. “I’m probably more successful in Europe than in the United States.”

The statements left Larry King dumbfounded: “But you are a superstar in the United States”, to which she quickly responds: “No more than Madonna. I’m bigger than Madonna in Europe. There I am more famous than the Rolling Stones”.

She also spoke about her love life and said that this factor also influenced her change. “I went to Switzerland a couple of years ago and found a man,” referring to German music producer Erwin Bach, who had moved to Zurich with his company, EMI Music.

However, she didn’t see the move as cutting ties with the United States: “I pay my taxes here, my family is here,” she told King.
