United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres responded to statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview with CNN this Sunday (12).
The Israeli leader said Guterres blamed Israel and should instead demand that Hamas obey the norms of international law. But Guterres insisted that he condemned Hamas “from the beginning”.
“But there is one basic principle for me: Hamas is not the Palestinian people,” he continued. “And you need to be able to distinguish Hamas from the Palestinian people. And that is why you cannot use the horrible things that Hamas has done as justification for collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”
He went on to say that there were Palestinian grievances that “concerned the 56 years of occupation,” although “none of these grievances justifies Hamas’ barbaric attack.”
Speaking about the UN’s potential role in mediation once the war ends, Guterres said the international community needs to come together and that the UN can “play a role” in that.
A transition “that is acceptable to Israel from the point of view of ensuring Israel’s security” will be required, he said, adding that it should “at the same time allow for the transfer to an effective Palestinian Authority.” ”
The exact composition of this is “not obvious at this point,” he said.
Guterres said it was essential to “take advantage” of the situation and “finally question the possibility of a two-state solution.” “The two-state solution is, in my opinion, the only way out,” he added.
