“To the backyard of NATO.” Russia sent strategic bombers to the Mediterranean

Three strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons, the Tu-22M3 of the Russian Air Force, were sent to the Mediterranean to “carry out missions.” This was reported by the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Long-range Tu-22m3 bombers made training flights over the Mediterranean Sea. Airplane pilots received practical skills to perform missions in new geographic areas,” the statement said.

The Drive writes that in this way the Russian Federation has officially confirmed that its bombers will carry out missions in the Mediterranean.

As journalists note, this reflects the expansion of Russia’s influence in the region, demonstrating the return of the Russian Federation to those missions that “Soviet bombers carried out during the Cold War.”

Then the military aircraft of the USSR followed the NATO warships operating in this part of the Mediterranean, the newspaper reports.

“Returning to the days of the Cold War, Russian swing-wing bombers will carry out naval missions in the NATO backyard,” the authors emphasized.

  • Yesterday it became known that for the first time Russia had the opportunity to operate long-range strategic bombers from its Khmeimim airbase (Latakia) in Syria – three Tu-22M3s have already flown there.
