To the delight of parents: YouTube will be restricted for older children and adolescents

Google has announced the imminent launch of a new parental control mode for the popular YouTube video service. The new mode is aimed at children 9-12 years old and adolescents, that is, those who have already outgrown the use of completely childish YouTube Kids.

Growing up children will be able to use the service through a controlled Google account, and parents will be able to choose which functions and videos will be available to the child. Beta testing of the new mode will begin in the coming months.

There are three options for setting restrictions for parents:

  • Base. This category is for kids who have outgrown YouTube Kids and are ready to migrate to the main platform. The selection includes video blogs, training and educational videos, music videos, as well as videos on games, new events and other topics that are of interest to children from 9 years old.
  • Advanced. The child will have access to a wider selection of videos than in the category “Content for children from 9 years old”, and live broadcasts.
  • Almost all of YouTube. The child will be able to watch almost all videos on YouTube. Only materials intended for viewers over 18 years old will be unavailable. This collection includes videos on “sensitive” topics that are only suitable for older teens.

When compiling selections, the YouTube team plans to use automatic filters and manually check videos, as well as take into account the ratings of authors and viewers.
