Doctor Daniel Proença, survivor of the attack that killed three orthopedists in Rio de Janeiro, made his first public appearance this Friday (1st), during a tribute from the USP Faculty of Medicine to the group. The ceremony, in São Paulo, had the theme of peace, and featured a performance by singer and composer Gilberto Gil.
“I am very aware of this tragic dimension of life, but also always hoping that things can be better,” Gil told CNN before the presentation.
Very emotional, Daniel, still undergoing treatment after being shot in the attack, received affection from professional colleagues. He asked not to be approached by the press.
“Health professionals are those who will receive people affected (by violence). In this case, we who are the front line were hit. We cannot trivialize violence. We have to position ourselves”, said the director of the USP Faculty of Medicine, Eloisa Bonfa.
The crime
The attack took place on October 5th, on the edge of Barra da Tijuca, west of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Doctor Proença was with Marcos de Andrade Corsato, Perseu Ribeiro Almeida and Diego Ralf de Souza Bomfim, brother of federal deputy Sâmia Bomfim (PSOL-SP), when they were attacked by armed criminals who got out of a car and shot at the group.
The group was in Rio to participate in a conference in the area. At night, they crossed the street from the hotel where they were staying for a get-together. That’s when the attack happened.
“A tragedy. This act today is an act of respect. Out of respect for professionals who are in another dimension and out of respect for their families. An act to draw attention to peace, against violence”, said cardiologist Roberto Kalil.
Friends and professional colleagues remembered good times alongside the orthopedists.
All professionals attended the USP Faculty of Medicine at some point in their career.
“One of them, Professor Corsato, is part of the daily routine at Hospital das Clínicas. He trained a lot of people, with a very beautiful story here,” she recalled to cardiologist Ludmilla Hajjar.
The investigations
The Civil Police investigation indicated that one of the professionals was mistaken for the son of a militia member. In an interview with CNN deputy Sâmia Bomfim, who stepped away from parliamentary duties, once again spoke of negligence on the part of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
“The investigation has not been completed. The line of investigation adopted is public, but we identify many negligences, many failures, mainly due to the state of Rio de Janeiro. How the families were communicated, by the press. No direct communication was made by the police or hospital. The disappearance of my brother’s things or even difficulty in accessing the investigation, which was only achieved through a request to the Court. It’s sequential violence”, said Bomfim.
Despite the suffering, the sister of orthopedist Diego Bomfim said she was grateful for the act this Friday (01).
“I think today’s act is a welcome for our family, we felt very protected, but also a message to society so that we can confront organized crime and militias, which are many victims,” he said.
