Today, April 19: The great Philhellenic and poet Lord Byron died 200 years ago

On this day, exactly two centuries ago, the world lost one of its greatest poets. On April 19, 1824, the great Philhellenic Lord Byron breathed his last in Messolonghi, besieged by the Turks, giving his life for our country – a country that was not his own. Lord Byron had a significant influence and support in Greece and the Greek struggle for independence and his love for our country was widely known. His interest in Greek history and culture was also evident in his poetry, often highlighting themes related to ancient Greece and the struggle of the Greeks against the Ottoman Empire. In 1823, he went to Greece to provide practical support to the Greek struggle.
