Barbie, the doll that is one of the most recognizable toys in the world, is made today 65 years old! The calendar read March 9, 1959 when the first Barbie doll debuted at the American Toy Fair in New York.
The iconic 11-inch doll was the country's first mass-produced toy doll adult characteristicsaccording to the History Channel.
Ruth Handler was the person who came up with the idea for the dolls Barbieafter seeing her daughter ignoring her dolls and playing with paper dolls intended for adult women. So Handler founded with her husband Mattel Inc., the toy manufacturing company in 1945.
Originally, Barbie was based on a sexy doll with the name Lilliwhich was based on a German comic from the 1950s. Handler bought the rights to Lilli, made her own version and named her Barbie, after her daughter Barbara.
According to the History Channel, in 1955 the doll was endorsed by the television show “Mickey Mouse Club” and became the first toy ever advertised to children.
