Olympic medals are very important for athletes, as they prepare throughout their lives only to win one of them and once they get it, that is when they can finally retire proud of the result.
However, for some it is just an “object” that can work more to save lives than to accumulate dust in the closet, at least that is how it is for the Polish athlete María Andrejczyk. The medalist sold her medal to pay for a child’s heart surgery.
Maria had a great participation during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, so much so that she managed to win a silver medal in the javelin throw. The medal made her feel that every training, effort and discipline had been worth it, but once she arrived in her country, she realized that she was only an “object”.
According to information from ABCA few days after the athlete arrived in her country, she learned that a boy named Milosz needed urgent help due to a heart condition. The little boy needed to be intervened in the United States and, unfortunately, the family did not have enough money to transfer him.
Shocked by the news, Maria had the idea of auctioning her silver medal to cover expenses. The bid started with $ 51,700, but then increased to just over $ 117,000. With that amount, he was able to open a bank account in which he deposited the money and also left it as a reference so that people could make a donation and thus add to the help that the child so badly needed.
During an interview for a Polish television channel, the athlete stated that the medal is just an object.
The true value of a medal always remains in the heart. The medal is only an item, but it may be of great value to others. This silver medal can save lives instead of collecting dust in a closet.
The most surprising thing about the whole situation is that the company that won the medal in the auction called Zabka Polska, a very famous food chain in Tokyo, decided that it would leave the medal to Maria.
We were very moved by the gesture of our Olympian, so we decided to support the fundraiser for Milosz, but we also decided to keep Maria with the silver.
Due to the athlete and her effort, little Milosz managed to get his operation and have a better quality of life.
