The pandemic has upset the rules, but it hasn’t stopped them Tokyo Olympics. Silence reigns all around, that of empty stands and audiences, of collateral events reduced to a minimum, of stadiums with reduced capacity, but the spectacle of the games does not stop.
It is from here, from this reflection and this unusual scenario that the idea of the artistic installation came to life “The games of silence” promoted by Technogym – Italian company world leader in fitness and sport and Official Supplier of the Tokyo Olympics – and since CONI. That is to say, a multimedia exhibition itinerary, inaugurated on 22 July at Casa Italia, the CONI base in Tokyo, where, surrounded by a silent space, 6 young athletes of the Italian Olympic team are portrayed during their preparation for the great challenge.
The dramatic black and white of the shots and videos amplify the absence of sound, the thunderous applause of the audience, the choral embrace of cheering, the pride of the national flag and focuses on a deeper and more intimate reflection on the meaning of the athletic gesture in the solemn moment of the competition.
But it is not a question of a static silence, on the contrary: it is a silence that is transformed, which becomes I listen when the athlete’s attention is entirely directed to the pure concentration of physical effort, the perfection of movement, rhythm, agone. The space of sound becomes physical, volumetric space: it is the athlete alone in the presence of himself, in absolute symbiosis with the machine, in a hand-to-hand which is at the same time a dance of movements in total harmony.
«Because there is no physical harmony without spiritual and mental harmony. Physical good, mental good, spiritual good: this is the truest expression of wellness », declared the curator of the installation Davide Rampello. «Wellness, which Technogym has been promoting for over 30 years, represents a social opportunity for everyone – Governments, Companies and Citizens – to build a more sustainable future based on people’s health. And the Olympics are an extraordinary opportunity to spread the culture of wellness through the example of great athletes ”, he concluded Nerio Alessandri, President and Founder of Technogym.
A highly metaphorical scenario and an immersive setting characterize this exhibition-installation with the artistic direction of Rampello & Partners Creative Studio, the photographic shots by Marco Onofri and the films by Luca Gasperoni.
