The beauty of the Olympics is waking up with a gold medal on the bulletin board and discovering that behind it there is the story of two girls who have done something exceptional, but know so much about normality. The first medal in the history of Italian women’s rowing comes in the double light weights with Federica Cesarini from Varese and Valentina Rodini from Cremona. They beat France in the final sprint by just 14 cents, the Netherlands third at 27.
It was a race to hold your breath until the end.
At 1500 meters the blue were third, they seemed off the podium at 1750. They have won accelerating in the last 100 meters.
It’s a whole crew lombardo that of light weights (it is so called because the two athletes cannot weigh more than 115 kilos in two). Of the two Valentina is the blonde one, she is 26, she is from Cremona, she has a degree in marketing. She had already been to Rio 2016, but with another partner. On the other hand, Federica Cesarini turns 25 on Monday 2 August, reaching gold in her first Olympic participation. She is from Cittiglio and graduated in Political Science with a thesis on the Olympic Games and enrolled in the master’s degree in government, administration and politics at Luiss.
“The last five shots didn’t pass anymore, they were the longest of my life”, said Valentina Rodini. It was she who screamed that it was gold to her partner. Like many sportsmen, they struggled in the pandemic, training with other crews when they couldn’t do it together.
Just a few minutes before their gold had arrived the bronze with Stefano Oppo and Pietro Ruta in the men’s doubles lightweight pair. In front of them Ireland and Germany, gold and silver. In this specialty, of which the two Azzurri have been at the top for years, there was no Olympic medal since Sidney 2000. Oppo is Sardinian, Ruta Como. Both have turned their thoughts to their lands affected by fires and floods.
