The final meeting of the Steering Committee for them Olympic and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will start today (19/5), with the organizers assuring so far that the world’s top sporting event can be held safely, despite the “nightmare” created by the coronavirus.
Both Tokyo 2020 and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) insist that the event can take place normally, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled for July 23rd.
This reassurance, in fact, is reinforced by the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), but also the executive director of the WHO Health Emergency Program, Michael Ryan, who had praised the mitigation efforts earlier this month.
At the same time, Ryan had successfully organized major sporting events and tournaments in the last year amid the pandemic.
However, the WHO official, although he stood in recent statements on the value of the “playbooks” of the organizers, at the same time took care to recognize that the Games are a complex event, which tends to develop into a risk management test.
It is unknown if spectators are allowed
Risk management will be a major topic of discussion at the meeting of the Steering Committee, as well as the possible presence of domestic spectators, with the final decision expected to be made next month.
Coordinating Committee Chairman John Coates will lead the discussions, with the ILO Vice President opening the meeting tomorrow (19/5), which will be attended by Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. and Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games Minister Tamayo Marukawa.
Koates had acknowledged earlier this month public concern, after 350,000 signatures were collected in just nine days and which were in favor of the cancellation of the Games.
According to APE-MPE, recent polls have shown that the majority of Japanese are against the Games, while there have been reports of small-scale demonstrations outside the National Stadium.
Concerns are being raised about the potential danger of an influx of foreign athletes, coaches, officials and the media, which could lead to the spread of the coronavirus and the creation of variants of the virus.
The Coordinating Committee meeting will last three days and will conclude with a press conference on Friday (May 20th), when the IOC and Tokyo 2020 will seek to provide further assurances to the public about safe Games.
