Tom Cruise will be present at Cannes Film Festival, which takes place between the 17th and 28th of May in the city that gives the award its name, in France. The star will be honored for his career in cinema.
Cruise returns to the festival on the same day, May 18, thirty years after his first and only appearance at the event. That night, he presented the competition’s most prestigious award, the Palme d’Or, to director Bille August, for the feature “The Best Intentions”, from 1992.
the awaited “Top Gun: Maverick”, starring Cruise, will appear in the out-of-competition special screening. The long, sequel to “Top Gun: Indomitable Aces”, from 1996, had its release hampered by the coronavirus pandemic.
In Brazil, the film hits theaters on May 26.
The film follows Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) after more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators. When he needs to train a detachment of Top Gun NCOs for a specialized mission no pilot alive has ever been on, Maverick meets Lt. also known as “Goose”.
Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a struggle with his deepest fears, culminating in a quest that demands a final sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly. In addition to Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Lewis Pullman. The direction is by Joseph Kosinski, the same as “Oblivion” and “Tron – Legacy”.
The Cannes Film Festival is considered the biggest in Europe and usually gives visibility to several productions of the season.
The official selection was announced last Thursday (14th) and is divided into different categories: films of great appeal to the public that compete for the awards; “Un Certain Regard”, which features films with an original aesthetic, but with a discreet, albeit intense, international impact; as well as out-of-competition productions – but which have a big impact on the film industry, special and midnight screenings.
