Tom from Brazil on Ukraine war is not neutral, says United States

The United States returned to pronounce with irritation the position of the Brazilian government on the War in Ukraine. This Tuesday afternoon (18), the press secretary of the White House, Karine Jean-Pierre, focused on the statements by Chancellor Mauro Vieira and stated that the tone of his words “is not one of neutrality”.

“We were frightened by the statements made by the Brazilian chancellor yesterday. It was not a speech with a tone of neutrality, ”he said. She stressed that it is “a mistake” to say that the US and the European Union have no interest in peace.

Jean-Pierre reinforced the North American discourse that the regime of Vladimir Putin is solely responsible for the conflict. “No country has dragged Russia into the war. Russia chose to initiate this conflict.”

The secretary informed that, despite the dissatisfaction of the White House with the recent statements, the ties between the two countries are not shaken. “Brazil is a sovereign country and is making its own decisions, although we don’t agree. But we are confident in the strength of our relationships.”

She also said that the United States and its allies have been working hard to help Ukraine defend its territory against Russia and try to reach a lasting peace agreement. “Unfortunately Russia was not interested in peace.”

The White House’s position came after the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, stated that Brazil “wants to promote peace”. “Brazil is ready to discuss with a group of countries, enlist a group of countries or join a group of countries that are willing to talk”.

Reviews

The Brazilian government was the target of several criticisms after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva claimed that Ukraine and Russia were responsible for the war and that the US and the EU helped to prolong the conflict.

This Tuesday, the spokesman for Ukrainian diplomacy, Oleg Nikolenko, reinforced the invitation for President Lula to visit the country “in order to understand the real reasons and essence of Russian aggression.”

White House National Security spokesman John Kirby pointed out that the Brazilian head of state “is reproducing Russian and Chinese propaganda” and that the comments were “simply wrong”.

Peter Stano, Chief Spokesperson for External Affairs for the European Union, highlighted that “the United States and the European Union work together as partners in international aid. We are helping Ukraine with self-defence exercises.”
