Tom Hanks criticizes new superhero productions: “What’s the point of these movies?”

The American actor Tom Hanks 68, compared superhero films from the 1970s and 1980s to current versions during his appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. According to the Hollywood veteran, recent DC and Marvel productions, even with the help of technology, have no story or objective.

“[No passado] They tried to make a TV version of Captain America and Spider-Man. The technology didn’t exist to make it look like it did in the comics and now it does. You can do anything. (…) Christopher Reeve’s Superman was the first to come close due to the cutting-edge technology that allows wires to be removed. We all believed [que um homem poderia voar] when we saw him. It was extraordinary”, he began.

“Now we are enjoying the luxury of wealth. You can make anything happen on screen, we’re being brought back to the concept of ‘Okay, that’s true, but what’s the story?’. You can dream of Lake Michigan and fill it with clocks that form a three-headed dragon that breathes fire and destroys Chicago. You can do this. But for what purpose? What is the story and what will it say about us?”, he continued.

For the actor, superhero films led the audience to find the best version of human beings while generating identification, such as Spider-Man’s confusion, Batman’s anger and Captain America’s patriotism.

“We’ve had 20 years to explore this kind of thing and now we’re in an evolution and in a place where it’s: And what is the story? The theme is what? What’s the point of these films? “, he questioned.
