This December 8th marks 29 years since the death of Antonio Carlos Jobim. The singer and composer from Rio was one of the precursors of Bossa Nova.
Together with Joao Gilberto (1931-2019) and Vinícius de Moraes (1913-1980), Tom Jobim was responsible for taking Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) abroad.
The singer died at the age of 67, as a result of a cardiac arrest, in a hospital near his apartment in New York.
Tom and Vinícius also created the song “Garota de Ipanema”, in 1962, sitting in a bar in Ipanema, south of Rio de Janeiro, inspired by the beauty of Helô Pinheiro who was passing through the street to go to the beach.
Currently, “Garota de Ipanema” leads the ranking of the most covered Brazilian songs in history. There are 442 re-recordings in total, sung by an extensive list of world-famous artists such as Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Tim Maia, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Whinehouse, among others.
