Tomato flu: the new virus that appeared in India and mainly affects children

After the start of the covid-19 pandemic, diseases caused by viruses have not stopped appearing, because when we thought everything was over, some cases of polio emerged and an outbreak of monkeypox was detected in various parts of the world, a disease that It was declared by the WHO as a global public health emergency.

However, it seems that these two viruses are joined by a new disease known as tomato fever, which has been discovered in India and has been identified as affecting children under five years of age. Fortunately, its emergence is not so alarming, since it does not endanger the lives of minors.

According to information published in the journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, tomato flu first emerged on May 6, 2022 in the state of Kerala, India. This disease shows symptoms such as fever, fatigue and body aches, very similar to those of covid-19, and mainly affects children between one and five years of age and immunosuppressed or immunocompetent adults.

From its appearance in May until July 26, 2022, state hospitals have reported that at least 82 children under the age of five have been infected, but that this viral infection is in an endemic state and, despite not having a specific drug to treat the disease, it is not considered to endanger the lives of those who suffer from it.

In addition to the symptoms similar to those of the coronavirus, those infected by this virus may experience skin rashes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, joint and muscle pain, such as the typical ailments of the flu. It is believed that this condition is a sequel to dengue or chikungunya, two diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes and that in more severe cases have caused death.

The name of tomato fever arose because the rashes that appear on the skin are in the shape and color of the fruit, gradually increasing to the size of a tomato. In addition, they are so painful that they irritate the skin a lot.

Because there is no special medicine that treats this disease, doctors recommend isolation for five to seven days from the detection of symptoms, as well as plenty of rest, abundant hydration and putting a warm cloth on the blisters on the skin. The study shared by The Lancet He also explained that young children are more likely to develop the disease, since they wear diapers, touch dirty surfaces and put things in their mouths.
