Tommy Dorfman, actress of ’13 Reasons Why ‘declares that she is a transgender woman

During an interview with the publication Time, Tommy Dorfman, the actor who played Ryan Shaver on the hit series 13 Reasons Why Netflix, cleared up rumors about her identity and confirmed that she is a transgender woman.

Dorfman shared the news with novelist Torrey Peters, confessing that for the past year she has been living and identifying, privately, as a transgender woman. During this period, the 29-year-old actress showed her physical changes on her Instagram account.

I am excited to introduce myself today as the woman that I am. My pronoun is she.

Thanks to ‘Time’ for this space, to Torrey Peters for writing this story and to Gizelle Hernandez for the images.

I am especially grateful for every transgender person who walked this path, broke barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically like her before me. Thanks to all the transgender women who showed me who I am, how to live, celebrate myself and take the space I deserve in this world.

Immense love for my team who, from day one, have supported me in my evolution.

Tommy also clarified that he will continue to use the same name, since his mother baptized him in honor of one of his uncles who died just a month after his birth, so he feels very connected with that name and its meaning.

The actress also said that when making her transition, she had to recalibrate her intimate relationships, since although she previously identified as a homosexual man, now in this new stage her interests as a transgender woman have changed, as has her relationship with Peter Zurkuhlen.

I was in a relationship for nine years with a gay man. I love him very much, but we have learned that, as a transgender woman, my interests are not necessarily the same as those of a homosexual man. So we had an amazing conversation to redefine our relationship as friends.

In addition, the actress clarified that she will not play male roles again, so her first character as a woman will be in Sharp Stick, the new film written and directed by Lena Dunham, who is also working on the new film by Polly Pocket con Lily Collins.
