Tony Blair is featured on the second day of the Amazon and New Economies International Conference

One of the highlights of the International Conference on the Amazon and New Economies, which takes place in Belém, in the state of Pará, this Thursday (31) was a lecture by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Blair addressed the issue of energy transition and indicated that Brazil may obtain positive results at the G20 meeting, scheduled for next year.

The manager of the Brazilian Mining Institute, Cláudia Salles, emphasized that Blair set the tone for the event when discussing topics related to culture and the Amazon.

“I respect ancestral cultures, respect, value and ethics for the people who are here and those who passed away. And how can we collaborate to promote this sustainability, promote the sustainable development of this region, which is a powerhouse and center of debate”, cited Salles.

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was also one of the attractions at the conference on Wednesday (30). He showed concern about the climate emergency and celebrated the holding of COP30 in the Amazon.

In addition to the keynotes, the conference features business exhibits and is attended by experts and thought leaders.

The elaboration of a short and long-term green agenda is one of the goals of the event, with efforts focused on uniting initiatives between the public and private sectors and civil society.

For Júlio Nery, sustainable director of the Brazilian Mining Institute, “the debate has to be in the Amazon”.

“We understand that Brazil, as the country with the largest territory in the Amazon, has to lead this discussion. But he can’t help but involve his neighbors. Be it Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and the other countries that also participate in this biome, which is so important and which today is the focus of attention in the world”, explained Nery.

In all, 180 lectures will be held, distributed in almost 30 different panels. All discussions held focus on advances and the strengthening of solutions that reconcile economic development, the reduction of inequalities and the preservation of the Amazon Forest.
