During his participation in the program “Altas Horas”, this Saturday (24), Tony Tornado, 93 years old, remembered his unusual meeting with Janis Joplin on the beach in Rio de Janeiro. The artist says that he “helped” the icon of the 60s and even gave her a bath.
“One night, Serguei [roqueiro brasileiro, falecido em 2019] He called me and said: 'There's a girl lying on the beach, who, believe it or not, is Janis Joplin'. I took Janis in my arms, I was very strong at the time, I took her from the beach, I came with her to the nightclub where we sang, I bathed her, we put her on stage and she sang until 7 in the morning. In the morning, there was already a fire engine at the door, there was a crowd there,” she says.
During his participation in the program led by Serginho Groisman, Tony recalled other moments of his career and how the song “BR-3”, one of the biggest hits in Brazilian music, came to him.
“I was a security guard at Praça Mauá and, in Copacabana, I was a night singer. And Antônio Adolfo and Tibério Gaspar were looking for interpreters for 'BR-3'. It was offered to Tim Maia, Simonal, but everyone was very busy”, he revealed.
“They said: 'There's a black guy in Praça Mauá who is a wonderful attraction.' It was me. I was a foreigner, I had arrived from the United States, I couldn't speak Portuguese because it was an international attraction (laughs). Girls on top, and me: 'Yeah, yeah.' They discovered me there and asked me to sing,” she says.
