The president of the Federal Reserve District (Fed, the US central bank) in Cleveland, Loretta Mester, said, this Thursday (16), that it is still too early to define the size of the increase in interest rates at the next meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) in March. But she said the central bank was still undecided on raising rates by 25 basis points at the next policy meetings.
“It’s not always going to be 25 basis points,” Loretta said during a question-and-answer session at a conference in Sarasota, Florida. “As we’ve shown, when the economy calls for it, we can move it faster. And we can make bigger raises at any specific meeting.”
She further commented that demand is not weakening at the expected pace. According to her, at the February meeting, there was a strong enough argument to raise interest rates by 50 basis points.
