Chip shortages, which caused price spikes in 2021, boosted the top ten global chip companies to $127.4 billion in revenue, according to TrendForce research. This is 48% more than in 2020.
TrendForce experts note three main differences between the 2021 rating and the 2020 rating. First, Nvidia overtook Broadcom for second place. Second, Taiwanese companies Novatek and Realtek moved up to sixth and eighth respectively. Thirdly, Himax replaced the tenth largest company, Dialog, acquired by Renesas.
The first place was retained by Qualcomm. Its success was driven by growth in sales of single-chip systems for smartphones and chips for IoT devices by 51% and 63%, respectively. Overall revenue growth was 51%. Nvidia, which occupies, as already mentioned, second place, was able to increase revenue by 61%. This was facilitated by the growth in sales of gaming graphics cards and data center accelerators by 64% and 59%, respectively. In third place, Broadcom increased revenue by 18%, being the only top five company to lag behind the market as a whole in terms of growth.
