Top US strategist on Black Sea drone shootdown: Russia is taking more aggressive action

The top American general, Mark Miley, made statements to reporters and emphasized that Russia is taking more aggressive actions, on the occasion of the downing of an American drone above the Black Sea.

“There is a pattern of behavior recently where they are taking a little more aggressive action from the Russians,” he said.

Also, as reported by the Reuters agency, Mr US military says two Russian Su-27 fighter jets approached MQ-9 Reaper drone on a reconnaissance mission over the international waters of the Black Sea. Fighters harassed the drone and sprayed it with fuel before one cut off the drone’s propeller, causing it to crash into the sea.

However, according to Russia, there was no conflict. The drone crashed after making “sharp manoeuvres”, having “deliberately and defiantly” flown close to Russian airspace.

In fact, with relations between Washington and Moscow at their lowest point in decades, the defense ministers of the two countries had a rare telephone conversation on Wednesday.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, speaking at the Pentagon alongside Milley, declined to elaborate on his call — including whether he criticized Russian interception.

At the news conference, Austin reiterated that the US intended to continue flying where international law allowed and required Russian military aircraft to operate in a safe and professional manner.
