Toshiba unveils plan to release HDDs larger than 40TB

Confirming the information that appeared in early February, Toshiba has published a strategy for the development of hard drives in the Nearline category. In short, the manufacturer expects to systematically increase the capacity of drives in the coming years using innovative engineering solutions.

Toshiba expects to increase the amount of HDD to 35 TB by the end of fiscal year 2024, and to take the bar to 40 TB by fiscal 2026.

Among the technologies that will achieve such impressive performance is an increase in the number of magnetic layers (up to eleven) and the use of proprietary proprietary technologies, including FC-MAMR (Flux-Controlled Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording) and MAS-MAMR (Microwave Assisted Switching Microwave- Assisted Magnetic Recording). These technologies, related to technologies for increasing the recording density due to the auxiliary effect with the help of microwave radiation, have been developed by Toshiba for a long time and successfully. For example, FC-MAMR technology is used in the N300 Pro and X300 Pro 18 TB drives introduced today.
