Toshiba has announced the launch of the MG09 series of hard drives. The series includes 16 and 18 TB drives. These are the first Toshiba hard drives to utilize the local energy impact on the media using a microwave field. We are talking about the proprietary Flux Control technology – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR), which has increased the density of conventional magnetic recording (CMR) up to 2 TB per one media plate. Since nine platters can be installed in the containment area of a third-generation drive filled with helium, the total HDD capacity reaches 18 TB.

The spindle rotation speed is 7200 rpm. The nominal workload is declared at 550 TB per year. The series includes 3.5-inch models with SATA or SAS interface.
Samples of the 18TB MG09 series hard drives are expected to begin shipping at the end of March this year.
