THE TotalEnergies announced on Tuesday (22) the “gradual suspension” of its activities in Russia, in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement, the France-based oil company said it would not sign or renew contracts for Russian oil and derivatives, with the aim of ending all purchases in the sector by the end of 2022.
The company stressed that the measures respond to “serious and unfounded” accusations that it was “complicit in war crimes”. The company condemned the Russian offensive in neighboring territory and said the conflict has “tragic consequences” for the population and “threatens peace in Europe”.
Total denied directly operating oil fields or natural gas plants in the country and also revealed that it does not intend to abandon some assets held in Russia, because international sanctions would make it difficult to find buyers.
“Abandoning these interests without consideration would enrich Russian investors, contrary to the purpose of the sanctions,” the company said.
The oil company had been under pressure to leave the country since the beginning of the war, when rivals BP and Royal Dutch Shell reacted more quickly and soon announced the suspension of Russian operations.
