With a harsh statement, Republican federal deputies Gas Bilirakis and Nicole Maliotakis respond to the support provided by US President Joe Biden to the possibility of selling F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Turkey, as reported by an ERT correspondent from Washington.
“It is shocking that President Biden supported the sale of US F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Turkey, while he had recently heard first-hand concerns about Turkish aggression from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his visit to Washington.
Mr Mitsotakis had raised the issue of continued aggression and overflights over Greek islands and warned that any sale to Turkey would result in further intimidation of countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region, including Greece, Cyprus and Israel.
We remain steadfastly opposed to any sale of US military equipment to Turkey and will continue to raise our concerns with our colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The bond between Greece and the United States is closer than ever, and it is up to Congress to stand by Greece against any kind of aggression, whether it comes from an adversary like Russia or a NATO ally like Turkey that continues to violate the international law,” the two Republican congressmen emphasize in their statement.
In the coming days, the reactions will peak with the filing of the amendment that will put obstacles in the sale of the F-16 and in general the climate in Congress regardless of the amendment remains negative. There is no indication as of this writing that the objections of the relevant committees have been overturned, something that according to secure information the White House is well aware of.
