Tourism and hospitality demand direct aid as in Germany to avoid definitive closures in the pandemic

The tourism and hospitality sector of the province of Castellón this Wednesday launched a clear and forceful message to the administrations focused on alleviating their complicated situation in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. The vice-president of the Provincial Association of entrepreneurs in the tourism and hospitality sector of Castellón, Ashotur, Luis MartÃ, in the presence of the regional secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, during the presentation of a gastronomic conference.

Martà argued that the health authorities reveal that the 96 percent of infections occur outside the hospitality sector. We understand that they want to cut off social life for the hotel business but, within the restrictive measures, there are some that seem reasonable to us and others that do not. Hopefully there are no more restrictions.

The vice president of Ashotur compared the situation of the tourism sector and related activities to that of the municipalities affected by a storm, underlining that we need direct help. Loans are not enough. The government took out the ICO loan line, but it was an amount that we later had to repay. We need direct aid, as it is delivered in other countries, “Martà added.

As an example, Ashotur recalled that in Germany the government agreed to inject 75 percent of a company’s declaration in the previous year. For example, if a company declared a certain amount in November, now the German government re-pays 75 percent of that amount, the rest is paid by them, but it is an important help, considered the businessman.

Martà assured that a third of the sector could close forever but indicated that, among those associated with Ashotur – an employer that was created 40 years ago – there has been no case of definitive closure, only temporary .  People have to try to put up with this situation because this will happen in a few months, â said the vice president of the employer’s association, stressing however right now we are sailing without direct help. In January there could be a massive closure of establishments.

Similarly, the sector requests administrations to lower the tax burden. Â «It is true that some municipalities are reducing taxes or eliminating the payment of fees, but we need it to be general. We don’t ask for big tax cuts, but we do that we are free from payments as far as possible regarding municipal fees or taxes, he added.

Martà indicated that the demands are directed especially to the central Executive, since the Generalitat Valenciana has less budget and margin.

It should be remembered that this Thursday at 11.00 am, in front of the Government Subdelegation of Castellón, there will be a protest of the hospitality sector to raise these and other demands, as well as the general malaise among employers.

Meanwhile, Colomer defended that the sector has obeyed each decision made by the higher authorities and will continue to do the same, in reference to the extension of the perimeter closure of the Valencian Community, advanced this Wednesday by Ximo Puig. The hotel industry, like festivals, have given a lesson in commitment, adapting and advancing to the situation from the first moment, considered Colomer, who acknowledged that « we are still in a tunnelbut showing optimistic with the arrival of a vaccine in the coming months that could help to alleviate the complicated situation.

THE AVT VALUES THE DECISION OF MARINA D’OR

  • Context. The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer, yesterday considered the temporary closure of the Marina d’Or tourist complex normal due to the complicated health situation. If demand contracts, supply suffers. We have to contextualize this measure at the present time, since the situation may get worse, “Colomer said yesterday in relation to the drop in tourists due to the closure of the Community.
  • The ‘post-Covid world’. However, Colomer sent an optimistic message by assuring that the post-Covid world will need to travel. As long as we are human we will need travel. Â We will seek the value of life and the value of time, â Colomer considered, encouraging tourism entrepreneurs.
  • The Community continues to captivate. In addition, the AVT head added that  «during the confinement it has been shown that the Valencian Community continues to interest tourists. They have continued to search for us and take an interest in our destinations, ”according to data from the Generalitat. We are in a conjunctural situation. The leisure society will have a place in the economy when everything passes, ”he said.
